Harry Burton (1879–1940)

Breve biografía

Harry Burton nació en en Stamford , Lincolnshire,quinto hijo de los 11 que tuvieron la pareja formada por el ebanista William Burton y su esposa Ann Hufton. Robert Needham Cust , abogado durante 20 años de la East India Company,ya retirado,regresó a a Inglaterra y se dedicó por completo a sus estudios.Tomo al joven Harry bajo su protección y le financió sus estudios.Posteriormente,ambos viajan a Florencia,Burton en calidad de secretario de Cust.Allí Harry alcanza notoriedad como fotógrafo de talento.Conoce Theodore M. Davis y en 1910 éste le contrata para sus excavaciones en Tebas,primero como fotógrafo y luego como director de excavaciones .En 1914, cuando Davis renunció a su licencia de excavación,entró al servicio de la expedición Egiptológica del MET como fotógrafo, cargo que desempeñó hasta su muerte el 27de junio de 1940 en Assiut.Fue enterrado en el Cementerio Americano de la misma ciudad.

En 1922 fue cedido por el museo a Howard Carter para registrar los hallazgos del equipo de excavación británica en la tumba de Tutankamón.Durante 8 años (10,según algunos autores ) estuvo fotografiando la excavación y todos los objetos de la tumba.

Una parte de su prolífico legado fotográfico se encuentra en el MET y la otra, junto con los documentos de Howard Carter , en el Instituto Griffith, Oxford, Reino Unido.
